IAEA DDG visits the OAP headquarters

             OAP welcomed Dr. Najat Mokhtar, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Head of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, along with her delegation, during their visit to Thailand on January 16, 2025. The visit aimed to strengthen cooperation and promote the advancement of nuclear and radiation technologies in Thailand at the OAP’s 60th Anniversary Building.

During a joint meeting with the OAP’s executives, Dr. Mokhtar shared her perspectives on utilizing nuclear and radiation technologies in Thailand and emphasized fostering international collaboration in applying these technologies to support sustainable development. She also toured the Nuclear and Radiation Emergency Operations Command Center (NuREAC), Thailand’s most advanced operational hub for nuclear and radiation emergencies, as well as research laboratories playing a crucial role in emergency response and enhancing nuclear security.

In addition, Dr. Mokhtar visited two Thai institutions leveraging nuclear technology :

• The Nuclear Technology Research Center and the Radiation Process Center for Polymer Modification and Nanotechnology, under the Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University, which focuses on innovations in materials science.
• The Faculty of Medicine at Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, which utilizes radiation technologies for complex disease diagnosis and treatment. This faculty was also designated as an International Atomic Energy Agency Collaborating Centre-Anchor Centre during the 68th IAEA General Conference in September 2024 at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna, Austria.

This visit underscored Thailand’s role as a key partner of the IAEA and highlighted the country’s progress in the safe and sustainable development and application of nuclear technologies.
