MHESI Permanent Secretary studies the IAEA’s nuclear training center model to further develop a national center for nuclear security cooperation.

On November 25, 2024, Prof. Dr. Supachai Pathumanakul, Permanent Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and OAP management team visited the world’s first nuclear security training center, established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Seibersdorf, Austria.

The objective of this study tour was clear: to bring advanced knowledge and technology from the IAEA training center to establish a nuclear security academic cooperation center in Thailand. The aim is to enhance the country’s nuclear and radiation security capabilities to align with international standards. This center serves as a comprehensive training hub, covering both theoretical and practical aspects, with a focus on preparing for nuclear-related threats such as terrorism, physical protection of nuclear facilities, nuclear forensic investigations, and cybersecurity.

Prof. Dr. Supachai emphasized Thailand’s potential to be a regional leader, stating, “The nuclear security training center to be established in Thailand will be an academic cooperation hub with the IAEA. This will not only strengthen the country’s security but also be a significant step in fostering stronger nuclear cooperation in the region.
