On August 30, 2024, Assoc. Prof. Pasit Lorterapong, OAP Secretary General and delegates from OAP visited the Nuclear Power Institute of China in in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province which is responsible for designing China’s first small modular reactor (SMR) with both direct and indirect safety systems, as well as safety regulatory measures for small nuclear power plants.
After that, the delegation visited the Tokamak facility at the Southwestern Institute of Physics of the People’s Republic of China, a research and development institution specializing in nuclear fusion technology for future electricity generation. The study visit provided insights into the operating principles of the Tokamak, China’s goals for using nuclear fusion technology to generate electricity, safety measures, and the challenges related to the legislation and regulation of nuclear fusion technology in the future, to ensure public and environmental safety.
