Assoc. Prof. Pasit Lorterapong, OAP Secretary General and delegates from OAP conducted a study visit to research and development agencies specializing in Small Modular Reactors (SMR) in Beijing and Hainan Province, People’s Republic of China, from August 26-28, 2024. The visit included discussions with relevant Chinese nuclear agencies on training approaches for nuclear power plant regulation, safety measures, and authorization procedures for operating nuclear reactors for electricity generation. The delegation visited various types of nuclear reactors at the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) and toured the SMR nuclear power plant at Hainan Nuclear Power Company in Hainan Province, focusing on the ACP100 small modular reactor. The ACP100 is a Generation III nuclear technology innovation developed by China National Nuclear Corporation Overseas (CNNC), characterized by high safety standards, short construction times, economic competitiveness, and operational flexibility. It can meet diverse electricity generation needs and aligns with the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model, which emphasizes the use of green technology towards a low-carbon society.
