The Utilization of Nuclear Energy in Thailand under the regulation by the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP)

For more than 60 years, Office of Atoms for Peace had laid foundation for the research and development on the utilization of nuclear energy in Thailand, until the issuance of the Royal Decree Establish the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (Public Organization) or TINT in 2006, As a result of this TINT is responsible for nuclear research and development, OAP plays the role of authority to regulate the utilization of nuclear and radiation in Thailand.

The Utilization of Nuclear Energy in Thailand under the reguation by the Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP)

For more than 60 years, Office of Atoms for Peace had laid foundation for the research and development on the utilization of nuclear energy in Thailand, until the issuance of the Royal Decree Establish the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (Public Organization) or TINT in 2006, As a result of this TINT is responsible for nuclear research and development, OAP plays the role of authority to regulate the utilization of nuclear and radiation in Thailand.

Nowadays, Nuclear Technology had become a crucial part in various thematic areas in our country as follows : as follows;

  • Healthcare and Medical : the radiosterilization of medical products, dianosis, radiodiagnosis, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, raio phamacy and other researches in the field.
  • Agriculture : soil erosion and water management, mutation breeding in crop production, sterile insect technique and food irradiation.
  • Industry : supporting the production and quality control, non-destructive testing (NDT) for heavy industry to analyze and evaluate the properties of materials, components or systems without causing any damage and the gemstone irradiation in order to enhance its optical properties.
  • Education : nuclear techniques for geological and cultural heritage researches and scientific studies of art and archaeology providing a neccessary complement for cultural heritage conservation, preservarion and investigation

Accordingly, the safety regulation of the utilization of nuclear and radiation, a crucial mechanism and mission of OAP has been OAP’s attention for nearly 6 decades. OAP carries out licensing, evaluation and inspection until the end of nuclear and radiation usage cycle in conformance with the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
